Lotus Limb Rehabilitation
Project type
HSE Spark Competition
Date
May 2025
Location
Sligo
The Lotus was created as part of the HSE Spark competition, it is a portable rehabilitation device which is aimed to be issued by the HSE, to support lower limb amputees in their recovery journey from the comfort of their home. Developed through user research with amputees, and interviews with healthcare experts such as physiotherapists, surgeons and material experts, the product addresses the gap between post surgical care and prosthetic readiness.
The device combines vibration therapy, sensory stimulation, and gradual weight-bearing to improve circulation, reduce phantom limb pain, and improve mobility and gait. A connected app allows users to control settings, track progress, and safely increase activity levels over time.
Lotus is designed for use from 2 weeks post-surgery and adapts through each recovery phase, making it a powerful tool to accelerate recovery, restore mobility, and prepare users for prosthetic fitting. With a calming, non-clinical aesthetic and a brand identity centred on peace, resilience, and empowerment.
